Did you know? You can ride a train through the middle of the steelworks

Did you know? Scunthorpe has a heritage railway that runs entirely inside the steelworks. The Appleby Frodingham Railway runs passenger trains on tracks normally used for moving molten iron, steel and raw materials.
Trips cover between 7 and 15 miles, all within the works. Most heritage railways have sheep. Ours has blast furnaces.
It started in 1990, when the works celebrated 100 years of steelmaking. The rail traffic department borrowed a steam engine and a coach to take guests around the site. Over 100 trips followed, for school children and the public.
When the requests kept coming, works drivers set up a preservation group in 1991. In 1992, members spotted a Polish steelworks selling a steam engine. They bought it and named it "Hutnik", Polish for "iron worker".
SRN Verdict
From 1993 it was their main engine for 12 years. Only in Scunthorpe.
