Roundabout famous for going nowhere to go somewhere, shock

The M181 "roundabout to nowhere", west of Scunthorpe (aerial, 2026)

Sad news for fans of pointless infrastructure. Work on the Burringham Bypass is due to begin "in the coming days", says North Lincolnshire Council. "Coming days" being the most exciting phrase in local government. Applebridge will build it. It should be finished early next summer.

The road links the M181 straight to Burringham Road. At the moment the roundabout has four exits. Two of them are dead ends. Half a roundabout, essentially. A modern art piece you can drive round.

The bypass should help people from Ashby, Bottesford, Burringham, Yaddlethorpe and Messingham reach the motorway. Without the scenic tour. It also prepares for six new villages planned west of Scunthorpe. Six. The council is paying £6.8m, which is a lot of money to stop a roundabout being a joke.

SRN Verdict

Council leader Rob Waltham said: "We've secured the funding, planning permission and now have a contractor set to build the road." Funding. Permission. Contractor. All that's missing is the road. Small detail.
