Did you know? The Humber Bridge was once the longest of its kind on Earth

Did you know? When the Humber Bridge opened to traffic on 24 June 1981, it was the longest single-span suspension bridge in the world. The whole world.

Starting in Barton. It held the record until Japan's Akashi Kaikyō Bridge took it in 1998. Show-offs.

The bridge is 2.22 kilometres long and links Barton-upon-Humber with Hessle. Building work started on 27 July 1972. Plans for a crossing go back to the 1930s.

Proper Humber pace. It's Grade I listed and can be seen for miles, even from out at sea. It was once the most expensive toll crossing in the UK, at £3 each way for cars.

SRN Verdict

In April 2012 the toll was halved to £1.50. Before the bridge, people crossed on the Humber Ferry, or took the very long way round by road. So next time you moan about the toll, remember the ferry.
